Stairs (wooden module sculpture)
Shot from two angles on my phone’s camera. Sadly, the piece was destroyed before I could take high-quality photos.

This piece deals with the idea of escaping. More specifically, it shows a person running from their life in the suburbs, the forever cliché symbol of monotony and routine. When they reach the end of the road, a place where they can choose whichever way they’d like, it all looks the same. They look up and the color changes to black and white, and the thought of the life they just escaped is in color, and their journey away from their domestic life is seen in a monochromatic tone. This suggests that it isn’t the place that makes the person happy or unhappy, satisfied or craving something more, but it is the person who creates these emotions for him or herself. The video plays on the idea of constantly wishing for more while ignoring the beauty and comfort in what is already had.

The main idea of this piece is to explore perceptions of identity. We tend to set goals and work toward them in a way that prohibits time for introspective thought and assessment of ourselves, so I wanted to create a situation where viewers would be the center of attention. Surrounded by copies— flattened, blurred images of “persons”— the subject, whoever is in the middle of the piece, has no choice but to stand out and be the focal point. Here, a sense of intimidation may become present, possibly because the copies suggest they are of the viewer, but also a feeling of focus and personal distinctiveness becomes unavoidable. In life, and art especially, the need for identity and reinvention of oneself is constantly present. With so many people on the quest for individuality, the ability to be relevant and creative becomes the most important aspect of the entire process.
